sabato, marzo 19, 2005 "Erm, folks, apparently our project received the 2nd lowest grade of all the groups. Those groups doing smoking and osteoporosis and breast and cervical cancer screening are helping out with talks and seminars and such with HPB... which apparently, helps to push up grades or something. The grade did not have anything to do with the trend of using prevalence rate ratios versus our (read: BOM's) insistence on using odds ratios; it has to do with relevance to the community... which explains the smoking one..."Now this is an excerpt from EW's blog. i almost wished i hadn't read it... my heart is all crushed and i'm really pissed with the PEOPLE UP THERE. In my interpretation, it seems like we just scored low grades because we didn't choose a topic that in their view, was relevant to the community. The precise reason why we're actually doing this project is to raise awareness of a problem (chronic pain) tt is PREVALENT and VITAL to the community? Isn't 31.4% prevalence of chronic pain actually relevant enough to the community? Or are we just supposed to choose a topic from ah hem, some kind of pre-approved list made by the 'people up there'? If that's the case, why not just give us the topic then... if those people up there cannot open their minds to the fact that chronic pain IS a problem in our community, and the implications it has on medical care, patients' needs and singapore's economy, then how are we ever going to be able to acknowledge new problems in our community? It's as if with all the info in front of them, laid out nicely, 'those people up there' apparently aren't taking notice of it... prefering to adhere to the fixed opinion in their minds that chronic pain is but a triviality in society... i'm sure we all remember this nice cofm teacher who admitted to us that she thought the prevalence of chronic pain in the community was a mere 3% or 1% or perhaps even less. Seems like their minds are kind of closed... ah well, shan't bother too much about them, at least i felt we did a good job, though it may be nowhere near international standards... if only our article could get into an established journal that is not the one starting with S... and doesn't have to be the big 'p', it would show them all... garrrr!
