:: more on medical stuff ::

i ought to be finishing the last 5 pages of my respi system but i just had to say something. i think so far, i've been very lucky, getting all the really keen tutors, they are so keen that when they find out that they only have ONE tutorial with us and will probably NEVER see us again, u could see the disappointment in their eyes. (yah, sadly, i change tutors practically every day, it does make it hard for us to learn.)

till now i'm quite blur, i dunno how to do a proper examination of the systems (maybe it's cuz i just started medical posting) hmmm but then, i really really really dunno what to do in practise. sure, i got my info fr talley, but then the actual examination at times may differ.

so far... respi
1. chk no. of fingers that can be placed in the region btwn sternal angle and inferior border of cricoid cartilage
2. compare symmetry of chest expansion using palms placed to encircle the thorax diameter (not v necessary)
3. percuss (shucks, i NEED lots of practice on that, or i'll be bruising the patient. so far most stuff upon percussion do not produce much sound)
4. auscultate... as the doc said, u can NEVER see too many cases! yup, fr monday onwards i shall aim to clerk a certain no. of patients a day. i hope to do at least 3 a day, best 4.

yl: do u have to report at 8am everyday? postings supposed to end at 5pm for me, but most times we get to leave a little earlier. actually if really want to slack some days could leave by 3.30pm... but i think i shall not!

today we discovered the doctor's lounge, their 'bedrooms', gymnasium and i think there's a recreational room. i also understand finally why in TTSH you don't see doctors walking around much, they all seems hidden somewhere, unlike in NUH where u see them all around. :)

:: Day 2 at TEE TEE S H ::

i really like to talk to the patients, i feel good after doing it. :)

today we spent our break in the sem rm going thru all the organs and conditions in mandarin n hokkien. i think my hokkien will improve by leaps n bounds soon! n i got to say this: guan hao's mandarin is SEH manz... who would know tt jia3 zhuang4 xian4 is thyroid gland!
okies, for my medical friends.... this might help:
lin2 bang1 xian/dao(sth like this): lymph vessels
yi2 zhang4: pancreas
pi2 zhang4: spleen
tonsils i forgot liao: tmr ask again. lol... i really REALLY have anterograde amnesia lor, i had to ask abt the lymph 4 times before it finally got in.
then they even talked abt elbow (the front part and the cubital fossa part!) uah! those TCHS pple really know their stuff!
hmmm GH cute, can sing the tee or or song... hehehe.... i think can go sing in the ward, prob the old folks will sing along wif him. think i wanna learn tt song too! hehehe...
oh manz i think speaking hokkien is pretty fun, we had a hilarious 1 hr plus in the sem room mangling our chinese roots. haha... funny... esp when dunno who tried to speak hokkien wif a french accent. eh hem...
heheh and mana sakit: where pain?
hmmm got loads of interesting things to say abt the patients but cannot leh, signed confidentiality form.

one thing i have to say: i'm v v v impressed by all the nice house officers, the registrars, consultants and all the nurses. they seem so cheerful n upbeat n nice n gentle n the patients lurve them! and yah, really, they are all sooo optimistic and there's always a bounce in their steps, so energetic, it makes me feel so ashamed of myself. they do 10x the work i do they face much more stress than me and yet i already look dead n seh seh (as yl puts it) by the time it's 3pm or so. i hope can be like them in time to come.

oh another nice part of clinicals is tt i get to dress nicely :) hee hee hee and it's quite fun! haha.... i have around 14 shirts/blouses n 14 skirts n a few pants. hehe... and i'm still spending close to 10min wondering what to wear to clinics the next day!

:: Communication skills ::

for the FIRST time, i felt that COFM dpt finally taught us something useful and can be applied. normally we have those pseudo patients scene and it's soooo unnatural! i like what we had today much much better. and it's so much more fulfilling. :) i can't wait for next saturday, miss all my other friends... like lulu... at least i got to see shing, cheryl n jiensze today at nuh.

our comm tut doc was just coooool... he's a gp, very funny guy, v natural, no pretentious (unlike the doc in purple in the cofm video) i bet his patients love him! we had a cool debriefing, not at the wards but he treated us drinks at the food court. pretty fun guy... cannot imagine tt he grad so long ago already!

:: Cake ::

N decided to bake a cake as a surprise for his mama. i thought it was a really cool 'adventure' so he went hunting for those recipes... i think it's his first time. i just receive the pictures of the cake. the one in the recipe book that look succulent, chocolatey and delicious and his actual cake fresh from the oven that looked kind of f.l.a.t [maniacal laughter...] but it still looked pretty good. edible. haha he says must practise more, i guess i'll test him when he returns! ;)

:: Which Type of Royalty am I? ::

You are a Maiden!
Content, Loving, Peaceful!
You wish to live your life however you see it.
Your cares are worldly and you wish to help others.

While you may respect hierachies such as that of royalty, you don't want to be tied down or bound to class-systems or any thing that would restrict you from what you love to do. You live a contented life as you have most everything you require and that which you don't, you are content with the knowledge that you will receive it one day. You are peaceful and have a desire to help others and to do the right thing. You would love to help starving communities or help just one person in trouble. You are truly a beautiful human being.

:: festival latino ::

another cool thing to add here! if was a fantastic really happening event! wooohoooo! still remember the ARRIBAAA, ABAJO, DERECHAAA, IZQUIERDAAAA! heh heh heh... v happening indeed. worth the money, next year i'm definitely going and with my significant other (if still around which i hope so) and going to stay till as late as possible cuz things really start to get going when it's around 1130pm or so. can see the human chain going on and people just go a bit crazy hehe... and everyone looks like they are having great fun!

salsa is... hmmm no other word to describe it but HOT. extremely vibrant, lively and sensual, it's THE dance and no wonder so many people here are simply crazy about salsa. i'm getting very tempted leh, but i find myself still quite shy in dancing heh heh heh.. especially if it's a class and there are like so many pple and a teacher and stuff... hmmmm shall think about it first. but so fun leh! haizzzz

so there was poor yowkhan who kind of bought tix for everyone going haha... so he had a whole bunch of like fourteen tix or so and then he was rushing fr one gate to the other to hand us our tix before we could enter.. hehe then we have to be tagged just so in case we left halfway we could re-enter again. basically there was him, khaitou, their frds fr salsa class, sophia n two frds, michael, selina n frd and sehleng. it's too bad khoon wong didn't go (oops i think i forgot to ask him...) and david (our hot salsa dude... hahaha) and izzy couldn't come coz got to teach or sth... eh.. dunno... and yeah miss N the most i think he would have enjoyed the event lots! ahhhh and then i would have like someone to embarrass myself wif. hmmph. heh heh...

so there was like a huge huge stage in front with those impressive looking lights and stuff, and a huge field simply filled with pple on sheets, pple grooving to the music, pathways had couples salsa-ing away. then right at the back were many many tents, representing various countries in latin america such as ecuador, mexico, peru and so on... sofia was advertising for her spanish class at the mexico stand but i didn't get a chance to speak with her. hehe heard fr michael she was her usual crazy self! :) haha today got to see a very fun side of sehleng. i dunno why but i've always felt a kind of connection, a sense of familiarity whenever i see her. i felt that even the first time i met her, at the spanish meetup. hehe JH ah, was wondering do you know her? she works at DSTAR and if i'm not wrong she might be in charge of some scholars. she was so cute, going CHANGE BAND CHANGE BAND when the jap band okinawa 1551 (which is not really great) was performing on and on and on...

haha.. ok now on about the performances... there was wicket aura which is this really cool fr all parts of the world but based in singapore (i think) band, their stuff's really HOT HOT HOT haha... lots of drums n rhythm, just makes u want to jump a long with them, pretty raw kind of rhythm, very physical i feel. then there was this jap band called okinawa 1551 i think... they aren't really good, they tried combining jap folk song with salsa and i think it's a fatal combi. lol... not v good only some parts were nice. michael said they prob can't hear their counterparts cuz they went bit off tune at times, yup i noted that too. and last complaint was that most of us couldn't really tell if there were speaking english, mandarin or spanish lol... we were only sure if they were speaking jap. haha... but then no one understood when it came to jap!

the BEST BEST BEST absolutely COOL guy was VICTOR HUGO, THE salsa no. 1 sensation of UK. it's just too bad that he only came on at 11pm plus so i couldn't really catch much of it. michael too, v disappointed both of us.. well at least he GOT to like enjoy some corona... bleah while i spent the whole evening convincing everyone tt i cannot drink ahah... but good lah now they all know... lol... so dun need to tell them again next time. haha.. i think YK might not believe me.. he thinks i got a 'medical condition' lol... prob he doesn't know that i'm really not kidding? haha... nevermind, some day he will get to know. hmmm n today i really really didn't really get what he was hinting at, i hope he didn't get any wrong ideas abt me n frd... shucks... esp cuz we left together.. haiz i wasn't expecting that, thought tt i would have to find my way to the bus stop alone. i think i have to find a chance to clear up any possible misunderstanding before it escalates n gets embarrassing. duh why am i so blur? or is yk too cheem liao...

hmmm... i wish i was still taking spanish lessons, i think they are planning to have our usual weekend night spanish revision group. since they already stopped lessons with marisa... prob tuesday night will be the night. i shall have to give them some impetus or they'll never start. too bad selina prob can't join cuz she got trip to germany. hehehe... ooo kudos to selina.. heh heh ur employer v bang in the latin fest!

what a chang2qi4 blog.

yl n sanz: it's too bad u guys didn't go for it. hmmm but sanz ah i think it might be better tt u didn't go cuz u can't stay out late right... then ur money won't be v well spent. heh heh heh...

i didn't take any pics cuz michael taking maybe see if they're good... see can get any from him.

:: the prince and me ::

i'm glad i chose to watch this film alone. hope that yl n sandra doesn't kill me, er, we were saying we'll be watching 'first 50 dates' on thur right? anyway, tat is definitely THE film to catch, very funny, the trailers would get u laughing already!

ok, contrary to well, what the trailer seems to imply, 'the prince and me' is not, i repeat not the typical prince meets commoner, marry, and live happy-ever-after type of pinkish gal flick. he he, not that there's anything bad about watching some of these once in a while. blah blah blah.... rather, it's a film about choice.

C.H.O.I.C.E

i could draw some parallels between paige (the main actress in the film) and myself. i feel that i'm very focused in life, very driven to achieve what i've planned, my goals are always crystal clear and i fight hard to attain them, and that control of my life mades me feel good about myself. yup, and then the something happened to her, that was roughly pretty similar to what happened to me and it well, to say it in a general way 'messed up my life', kind of like, i lost focus, felt rather scared, because it made me feel that i was no longer in control of my life. it's like i stepped into someplace unfamiliar, scared, don't know what i want, what i feel and yet i KNOW that there was something i seem to be searching for... don't know how i can put it.

but i know that for sure there are two ways i could go about it:
one, i could ust retreat into my own self-controlled world, where everything would be clear, organised, probably unemotional, attainable, spelt-out goals and probably i would succeed, feel good about myself.
second, i could continue this path into the unfamiliar territory, i might find what i'm searching for, i might fall down, or i might wander off the path, end up getting lost. it would be a 'harder' path, technically speaking, because of possible dangers, unknown rewards, the lack of control over circumstances.

i think i've chosen the second and i hope that it'll prove to be the more-right choice (because i don't ever feel that there's a wrong choice in this world) (when you think about it, every choice we ever made probably seemed right to us then, it's only in retrospect that we berate ourselves for having made that 'wrong' choice) relationships ARE complicated, you can't control them, because you can't ever control someone else. and i know that if i do fall, i'll pick myself up again, and if i do get lost, i believe that eventually i'll get back on the path.

something i would just like to share with everyone who actually read this blog:
it's always, always better to try something then regret not even trying at all, because we have to remember that all 'good' things, have to be earned.

:: ana y los otros ::

int'l film fest...

there were eight of us, em... michael, yowkhan, khaitou, selina, renee, sophia, sehleng and myself. all squashed into the corner rows at jade in shaw towers, thank goodness it's not the same lousy one i went to for 'hable con ella' but the film was... erm. one word. abrupt.

ana who lives in bueno aires goes back to her hometown for a couple of days, she meets up with her old friends, one of whom STILL has a crush on her, em.. think his name is diego. anyway, but she's looking for her boyfriend who she had to leave behind when she went to the city to work, and his name is mariano garrido. ok so this eponymous hero.. no... make that the invisible hero seems to be 'the one' she's looking for... for love i mean. but anyway it doesn't matter cuz we never get to see this hero at all, just see his backview and his silhouette. um... so she traces him from paraná to gualcaguay (if i din't spell wrongly) and finally, we see him entering his house. she gets off her car, presses the bells, we hear something like 'xxx' anyway it was in spanish plus argentinian accent so didn't really catch it... then camera pauses almost an infinity on the closed door.... then the credits roll.

abrupt! he he but typical for an art film.

there were some interesting ideas brought up in the film. like love is always unfair, two people don't love each other equally. like as ana mentioned, when you look at a couple, you can tell who loves who more. interesting idea, and i think it's true... i've had my own encounter of it too, hmmm think for the next couple of days i'm going to be couple spotting...

:: Electricity Appreciation Class ::

Today at around 1145pm, i attended the above said class together with loads of people in the western area of singapore. some of whom said tt the class was heralded by the sound of an explosion. no one knows what happened but here are some of the things that happen: in sequence.
1. abrupt darkness followed by silence
2. footsteps along corridors
3. sounds of exclamations
4. torches flicker... 'disco lights' on the opposite block
5. starts to get fun, as some think so they start having competitions to see whose torch is the strongest.
6. after 15min, more flickering orangey lights seen, pple switching to candles
7. more flickering, noises, sirens...
8. contemplation of the darkness and silence
9. i was trying to read buffy with the lousy free pentorch and a nice candle next to my bed
10. desperately fanning myself with empty file
11. hot tired and sleepy, wondering if i shld go bathe
12. sounds of woohooos... no need to see i also know tt it means lights up again!
YEAH!

end of electricity appreciation class... he he he... i wonder what happened.

today was really productive, as in i bought all the things that i needed to buy before school started. i got my shoes, for clinicals, on retrospect, the heels might be a bit too high for me, haha i prefer low shoes. anyway this is just great cuz it gives me an excuse to go shop for shoes. i lurve shoes. haha... just looking at them will keep me happy, i don't buy up the shop.

i got my bag too, it's nice, and reasonably priced. just the right size, can put a small file if i want to or books, the stethy will go in fine as well, yeah n um... hehe.. the tendon tappers won't stick out on one end. yeah and this bag can be carried in three ways. like if u have a lot of stuff, it's the rectangular shape, if little stuff, then it'll look like a tote bag and if u wanna look casual can carry it slung across the shoulder as well.

oh and i also got a bday present for my pri sch friend.. but shush cuz i know she reads this blog. he he he...

tomorrow i'll be going to ntu with my cousin to 'harrass' the bizad students [cackles evilly]. she's doing her phd and doing exporatory study... ah, i'm so tired of repeating all this, but if there's anyone out there who is a bizad student or who knows bizad pple, pls help us ah!!! she's offering SGD$2 for each person you refer (and of course must be able to contact tt person to do the interview). interview can be on the phone, max 10min.

erm, these days busy also with a few other things but can't say here heheh meant to be surprise for a few pple. :)

:: The Package ::

today i was both delighted and surprised upon receiving a non-descript package. then i saw the cutey roundish handwriting lol.... and i knew who it was from... yup so i just tore it apart... bit violently. and guess what i found!
1. two erasers fr N's eraser collection... one of which was a very orangey slice of orange eraser and the other was a tiny heart.
2. a poster from his bedroom wall, very cute little baby polar bear asleep in the paws of the mother. so cute!
3. a miniature 'plastic eraser' lime cordial which he stressed CANNOT and MUST NOT be drunk cuz i have a penchant to like chew on almost anything.
4. a card with my name and the meaning of it in italian(which until now i haven't started to work on yet, so paiseh)
5. an italian CD about science and technology which i'll go chk out tomorrow.
6. a suspicious looking package or medicine, or i thought it was but actually it was a small book of medical jokes packaged like a packet of medicine... so cool right? yeah well anyway, i randomly flipped to one page and read but em... i knew it was gonna be funny... but i failed to catch the joke cuz the most impt word was in italian and i din have the dictionary with me at that time... er.. so shao3xin4 lol...
7. a packet of powder tt has to be mixed with this creamy peroxide solution to dye the hair. but em... i only have the powder so i guess it'll be sitting on my display shelf for the moment.
oh boy but it did put me in supremely good spirits hehe...

:: Still Having A Bad Day Pt II ::

The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both.

:: Still Having A Bad Day? ::

There was a case in one hospital's Intensive Care ward where patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11 A.M., regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought that it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths ccurred around 11 A.M. on Sundays. A Worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11 A.M., all doctors and nurses nervously wait outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about.
Just when the clock struck 11:00 A.M. - Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so that he could use the vacuum cleaner.

:: Estoy solo. No hay nadie en el espejo. ::

'Estoy solo. No hay nadie en el espejo. ' This is a 'cita' in spanish, meaning quotation... also called cita celébre or ‘frase popular'. 'Frase' means sentence. This quote literally means: I am alone. There is no one in the mirror. But heh heh, i usually don't like to translate such quotes into english, it spoils the beauty of it. i chose this quote cuz i liked it's simplicity and its poetic beauty. oh and it's by Jorge Luis Borges. Here's a little bit of background about him:

An Argentine poet, essayist and short-story writer, most of whose tales embrace universal themes - the often recurring circular labyrinth can be seen as a metaphor of life or a riddle which theme is time. Following his recovery after a severe head wound, he became an extremely prolific and respected writer. Despite becoming blind due to a congenital defect that was hereditary in his family, he continued to publish his works. Regretably, although his name was often mentioned in speculations about the Nobel Prize, Borges never became a Nobel Laureate.

This is my favourite paragraph: 'El mañana no le está aseguarado a nadie, joven o viejo.

:: transcribing work ::
i'm currently doing transcribing for my cousin. she's doing her phd and she just started her exploratory study. exploratory means that it's the first study to be done, and the results of the study will be used to construct the final survey. yah, actually i was supposed to help her interview bizad students of NUS/NTU after my exams but cuz an exploratory study isn't very easy to conduct, so i'm doing the transcribing part for her instead. Well, it's good anyway, i think i'd be better at transcribing then exploring especially since i'm not the one doing the phd i don't exactly know what to probe for the best results. i've done my first transcript so far... it was only 22min long but the transcribing takes up to 2.5hrs! horrifying right? it's super tiring, fingers, shoulders ache, even ears began to ache hahah... but it was quite enjoyable, funny... very interesting to hear what the student had to say about his course, school and other stuff... for a year one, i thought he was pretty mature. yup so it was a great experience, an eye-opener i would say! i'm looking forward to the other recordings...
now gonna go transcribe!

originally first blog...

oh well this blog was supposed to come before the passion of the christ one but cuz SOMEONE kept hurrying me to blog blog blog... haiz... ok
some disclaimers, i got this blog skin fr www.blogskins.com, but i modified the pictures a bit (ok make that a lot!) used photoimpact, cloned, added in new text, and uploaded to my own server. yup and um... also i added on some javascript to change my cursor, and also, the stuff flying around my cursor... sorry it's suppoesd to be purplish semi-transparent stars but i guess when u convert a file from .ufo to .gif it's quality is worse yup, so it looks like PINK specks flying around... hhahaha but i like it a lot, it's dhtml btw.
erm... oh also added in a tag-board, tt's rec by my bro better than flooble cuz it's more stable and you can customise... lol... i think i'm real bad i removed the link for credits to blogskins and stuff and also the link to tagboard. oops! i know u can't do it for flooble! haha... i HATE advertisements on my blog. luckily this blog skin's a NO AD one. ;)
hehe feel a bit guilty for not leaving credits, like what we do in our research and projects. this is the FIRST time i never left a biblio...
'Estoy solo. No hay nadie en el espejo.' that's one of the quotes of Jorge Luis Borges, he's a great guy! i loved his letter... despedida i think, i can't rem the entire title but it was v well written, almost poetical and extremely meaningful. this quote i put there doesn't have any pertinence to me, just that i like the way it's written kind of bittersweet, hehee so don't have to crack your skull trying to analyse it.
btw, 2 persons have tried to psychoanalyse me just yesterday and today, both times it made me quite pissed off, cuz they were people who hardly knew me, yeah so well... i just hope that they'll get out of my shoes cuz i don't them standing in mine!

u noe, when we go out and stuff we always mention and wonder aloud how does posh branded shops actually survive right? cuz they look so deserted. ah well, ok cuz i had to go into chanel to repair those specs n while i was inside i realised that i couldn't see beyond the interior of the shop, so it's actually really huge inside, lots of different chambers, sofas, tv and stuff. tt's y we can't see how many people there are inside. and next, i was v surprised, there was a significant no. of pple inside, and they weren't exactly browsing, most came in and knew what they wanted and bought something. yup, business was brisk! i was inside for 15min and i think around 4 people bought stuff and like two more were choosing stuff... impressive right! lol... i dun even dare to think how much the items cost, cuz anyway no price tag. but i do know that a pair of sunglasses cost SGD300. haha tt's why people who buy chanel stuff from me get a really good deal, it's only 100-150bux. yup and it's REAL stuff, proven from the fact that i took of one the glasses to get the screws tightened, and there was no quarrel about the authenticity of the glasses. the packaging's identical too. then it struck me again, cows, i don't think i'll buy anything branded UNLESS i have that much extra cash to burn, i mean... they earn a 300% profit!!!
ok, finished raving against the exhorbitant amt those pple earn... back to my transcribing work...

i watched 'passion of the christ' yesterday... it was good! i forgot that it would be in hebrew but it was fantastic! i mean, the movie wouldn't be half as good if it weren't in hebrew, there was some latin as well, and i managed to pick out some words cuz it's a bit like italian. :)
unlike many epics, this movie wasn't the least bit draggy, it's was just nice. it didn't glorify anything or any religion either so i think it's a very good portrayal of history as the producer interpreted it. i'm not sure whether it's 'by the book' or not, but then it's still a very good movie to watch.
yep, it really stimulates ur lacrimal glands... and this doesn't always happen to me. was a good type of crying, kind of feel relieved after doing it, so peeps, those watching this movie, pls don't hold back your tears, you'll feel like a load's off your shoulders when you cry it.
As for the bloodshed and violence, um.. yeah, some parts of it can get bloody, but i guess that's just an accurate portrayal, scientifically speaking, who wouldn't shed that much blood if you had to go thru such an ordeal, rite? if you take the violence and blood as a part of the content of the movie you wouldn't feel so much about it. i believe that what should strike the moviegoer is the high emotions of such a scene, not the brutality... but the kind of love/respect/whatever you would call it, i can't say for sure what emotion that is, that you feel for a man willing to suffer for the sins of the world.
yup, it's a good movie, nothing religious about it, so i really don't think that there's a diff for a christian or non-christian. great watch... just don't try to bring in any popcorn or those junk food, i doubt you'll have the appetite for it, and um... do bring in lots of fluids (as long as there's a toilet within the theatre)!
